(she/they)
Hi there, I’m Jen, the founder of United in Birth, a birth and postpartum doula, and spiritual herbalist. I’m a first-generation Dominican American—ni de aquí, ni de allá—and Queer, which means I’m no stranger to navigating the spaces in between. Being a middle child has shaped much of who I am: a keeper of peace, a bridge builder, a truth teller and someone who deeply values compassion and connection.
Before I became a full-time doula, I spent eight years working in public health, including serving as a Perinatal Health Educator for the Peace Corps in Guatemala. There, I learned traditional birthkeeping practices, facilitated pregnancy support groups, and conducted postpartum visits with new families. I also worked as an emergency manager for a federal agency, helping lead recovery efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. These experiences taught me the importance of community resilience, the power of support, and showed me the deep strength of people coming together when systems fail them. I bring that understanding to my work as a doula and herbalist—rooted in community, resilience, and the healing we all deserve.
My journey into birthwork has been one of rediscovery, reconnecting to my roots and the wisdom of my ancestors. The deeper I got into my work, the more information was revealed. The tipping point was when I started to struggle with burnout. Even though I was passionate about my work the emotional and physical toll of supporting others left me feeling drained and creatively blocked. It was at this time that I found Sacred Vibes Apothecary and started my journey into herbalism. In my quest for healing and a lot of support from Rose, I reconnected with my family legacy of yerberas and herbs became my ally in restoring my energy and creativity. Herbalism helped me recover from burnout, connect deeper to my ancestry and also expand the ways I can show up for others.
Now, I blend my work as a doula and herbalist to offer holistic tools to the doulas and families I support. I bring the wisdom of herbal remedies into every aspect of my care. I want to help you find the same balance I have, whether you’re dealing with burnout, simply looking to expand your toolkit or pregnant and looking for additional support.
Healing isn’t just for the families we serve. It’s for us, too. We can do this work from a place of abundance, not burnout, and I’m here to help guide you in that process. Let's heal, grow, and support each other together.
When I’m not doula-ing, you can find me in the kitchen mixing tea blends while blasting some Bad Bunny, or pretending to be a sportsbian playing second base in my Queer softball league. I’m supported by my formerly mean cat, Pablo, my affectionate dog, Charlie, and my life partner, Goose.
Gratitude
I’d like to take a minute to thank all the wonderful teachers who I have learned from and the capacities in which I know them. Who I am as a doula is shaped by them.
